The sacrament of Healing is also known as Anointing of the Sick, Extreme Unction, and Last Rites. Jesus demonstrated great concern for the physical and spiritual welfare of the sick and commanded his followers to do the same. This sacrament is administered to individuals with serious illness or who are in danger of death. Through this sacrament, Jesus strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness or injury, offering them the strongest means of support.
When approaching death, the Sacrament of Healing reflects receipt of prayer and blessing from the Church to strengthen our soul as we transition from this life to the next. The process often referred to as Last Rites typically includes receiving the Sacraments of Healing, Reconciliation, and Holy Eucharist.
As a faith community, this sacrament also offers the opportunity to deepen both personal and community faith through witnessing the recipient's faith and devotion evidenced in the sacramental anointing.
