On November 27, 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in Paris, France and gave her a vision of an image, with instructions to strike the image, front and back, onto a medal. The medal spread widely and became a great source of many graces and miracles for its wearers, earning the name "Miraculous Medal," and has become a treasured sacramental of the Catholic Church. On November 4, 2023, Mrs. Veronica Alexander was among nearly 50 servant-leaders recognized by the Archdiocese's Office of Black Catholic Ministries (OBCM) as 2023 recipients of the "Mrs. Sophie Marie Watts Aramburo Awards." The awards are bestowed on Black Catholics who exhibit the servant leadership embodied by the late Sophie Aramburo who served as the OBCM associate director from 1990-98. Well done, "Ms. V!" Our parish office will close at noon on Wednesday, November 22 and re-open on Monday, November 27, 2023. Our Thanksgiving Day mass on Thursday, November 23 will be at 8:00 am in the church. On Friday, November 24, there will be no morning mass.
Our church parish annual Christmas Raffle is now underway. Each raffle ticket is $1 for a chance to win one of the following cash prizes: 1st prize - $600, 2nd prize - $400, and 3rd prize - $300. Drawings for prizes will be Sunday, December 17, 2023, after the 10:00 am Mass. The person who sells the entire book of 25 tickets with the winning 1st prize will receive $100. Brouney Joseph Lewis, known to many as "Brent," died Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the age of 78 years old. On Saturday, November 11, visitation will begin at 8:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, both in our parish church, and followed by interment in our parish cemetery. A statue of St. Martin de Porres stands in our parish church. He was born in Lima, Peru, the illegitimate son of a Spanish knight, John de Porres, and a freed Panamanian slave named Anna. In 1594, Martin became a Dominican lay brother in Lima and served in various menial offices. Outside of the monastery he became known for his care of the poor and sick.
